Web Site Maintenance: Is it Worth It?

Regardless of the size of your business, the odds are that you have made a significant investment in creating a presence for your company on the Web. And with good reason since it is one of the first places people look to learn more about your company. Remember the business cards you hand out at client meetings, trade shows, and social gatherings? The people that received them are likely visiting your website the next day or week, and what they see will make a powerful and lasting first impression. It may determine whether they make contact and buy into your company's products and services ... or move on.

To preserve the investment in your company's website, you should allocate a reasonable amount of time and money each month for web maintenance. There are many reasons to make web maintenance a priority. Here are just a few:

PEOPLE WANT AND NEED VARIETY. If your site looks exactly the same today as it did six months ago, visitors are unlikely to come back. It's the equivalent of seeing today's newspaper over and over again.

LINKS GET BROKEN. Perhaps you've linked your front page to another web site ... to a magazine article... or to a particular graphic. It's very easy for that link to become broken because an article has been retired, a web site address has changed, etc. You need to be vigilant in testing your links. Broken links could also adversely effect listings with some search engines.

NEW INFORMATION. If your company has scored a major win... a significant write-up in a magazine ... or introduced a new product, that's big news. That information should be posted to your website as fast as possible. Imagine the dissatisfaction when someone reads about a new product in a press release or newspaper article, goes to your website for more information, but can't find a mention of your new product there. That can do a lot of damage. Your website needs to be in synch with the rest of your marketing program at all times.

SCHEDULES NEED TO BE UPDATED. Does your company list trade shows, seminars, and training classes on its website? If so, that list needs to be constantly updated. People are increasingly using the web to learn about upcoming events and to register for them online. Outdated info could be costing you.

PEOPLE CHANGE. People leave and new employees arrive. The email directory will be affected.

MATERIALS CHANGE. Many companies have their brochures and promotional materials on their websites as downloadable PDF files. This is a wonderful way to get product information into the hands of potential buyers -- at their convenience. But again it's critically important that these web-based materials are up to date. Make sure the brochure describing the new version is waiting for people on your website the day that you announce it. It's equally important to remove older product lines.

STREAMING VIDEO. You create a high level of customer service 24/7 when you have video online. Whether it is a commercial  FAQ, or self-service repair tips, it will bring customers back time and again and create additional opportunities for repeat customers. To add streaming video to your web site, simply send us your DVD, VHS or S-VHS video clips.
